“I only wear minimal makeup - mascara, light brow stuff, sometimes something to get rid of the redness on my face. If I’m going out or to an event or something like that, I’ll do eye-liner. I’m really bad at everything else though. I don’t understand how to put on eye-shadow and make it look good? But I’m really impressed by people who can put on makeup well, and with those who put on a full face every day.”

“I just started messing around with makeup for fun. My girlfriend is into makeup and it’s cool to come up with new looks. We’re both inspired by the androgynous styles of 80’s rockers. What I like is how much of an art form it is. Playing with different colors and textures can get really in depth. It makes you feel hot too!”

“I used makeup daily in high school because I felt ugly without it. People would often comment that I looked tired or sad on days that I wouldn’t put my usual full face on. One summer I stopped wearing it daily because I was working a job that caused me to sweat it all off anyway. I became used to how I looked without makeup and realized that, even though I though it made me feel better about my appearance, its unrealistic standards are what plummeted my self-esteem. I haven’t worn makeup in 3 years and I’ve never felt better about my appearance.”

ABOUT.

Makeup Is Deeper is an exploration of the use of cosmetics in modern culture. In a society that glorifies beauty that leans on makeup and other external objects, I wanted to get a glimpse into what someone’s personal journey with makeup looks like. Makeup is a broad topic that covers many aspects, but mostly, it is a personal journey. Everyone that wears or doesn’t wear makeup does so for different reasons. I wanted to get an understanding of why people wear or don’t wear it, and what it does for them personally. I have gathered responses from a diverse audience in order to gain a better understanding of how people, in general, feel about makeup. Through these interview based responses, I have developed some assertions in regards to the use of makeup for appearance, confidence, expression, and perception. Ultimately, my goal in completing this project was to prove that makeup is different for everyone, and is really anything the wearer wants it to be. I hope that in reading through the responses I’ve gathered, viewers can relate to each one in a personal way This might change the way they view makeup, whether that change is in a positive or negative light.
